What affects the cost of Roof Trusses?

A Roof Truss is an engineered timber product, which is held together by nail plates which are pressed on our modern equipment. Although trusses are designed as individual components, when erected they form the overall roof scape of a building. Most trusses will have rafters, ceiling chords and webs which are made from graded timber.
The individual pieces of timber are subjected to forces from the building which means they are always either in tension or compression:
A member which is subject to tension is always being pulled or stretched.
A member which is subject to compression is always being pushed or compressed.
Roofs constantly have forces applied to them, whether it be the self-weight of the materials, the weight of the tiles, the force from a gust of wind or the load from snow during the winter. These forces dictate how much the roof truss is being tested in both tension and compression. If a member is tested to the point where it is under too much strain, then the bespoke software we use will automatically specify a larger section of timber which will perform with a built in safety factor.
As a result of the size of the building and forces applied, this will ultimately influence the size and quantity of the timber members used to construct the truss.
As a rule of thumb, the larger the span and the higher the loading is, the more timber is required and therefore more material cost. The only way this can be minimised is with supporting walls inside of the building, or steels.
Attic trusses (for a room in the roof) or raised tie trusses (giving a semi-vaulted effect) are more expensive due to the larger loads being applied and the configuration of the rafters, ceiling chords and webs.
