Visible Floor Design with Glulam Beams and I-Joists
Aswell as our work for larger developments amongst the UK’s housebuilders, RML also provide design and supply for specialised projects. Based in Worcester, a recent timber frame project allowed Joist Designers at our Flooring Midlands factory to utilise both I-Joists and Glulam Beams to create a unique visible floor design.
A glulam beam is a type of structural engineered timber product comprising of a number of layers of dimensioned timber bonded together with durable, moisture-resistant structural adhesives. When designing rooves or floors, glulam is a cost effective alternative to steel, thus providing a complete timber solution from just one supplier. Also with the ability to be manufactured in a variety of straight and curved configurations, architects are offered artistic freedom without sacrificing structural requirements.
As experienced suppliers of glulam beams, we incorporate them into designs for a visible timber frame layout. Glulam Beams are one of the strongest structural materials available today, are easy to use, durable and fire resistant. They are often chosen as a design feature to provide a rustic feel within modern buildings.
For this particular project, our Joist Designer Ben Griffiths worked with the customer to incorporate both I-Joists in the left side of the building as shown below, but with Glulam Beams used on the right side to be completely exposed for a key feature:
Ben communicated with the customer to make the relevant changes to the design, as the inspiration developed for including exposed beams. Initially as a standard floor, developments were made to transfer the floor into timber frame, then deciding on the final design of half glulam with an open ceiling.
Further expanding the possibilities of this design, our customer then contributed their own decorative hangers to further complete the desired aesthetic. During this project, Ben was able to develop his knowledge of glulam designs with the support of our experienced design team. Deliveries have recently been made for this build and we look forward to the opportunity to work with this Midlands based builder in the future.
