Resuming I-Joists Production in Scotland
Following the return to production after lockdown, RML’s national stature meant that we kept a close eye on changing government Covid-19 restrictions for England, Scotland and Wales. Especially for Scotland, there have been stricter precautions in place to prevent the spread of the virus. This meant resuming I-Joists production at our RML Scotland site at the later date of July 1st.
Employee’s safety is still a main priority and this has meant implementing flexible working practices wherever possible. The vast floor space within the Scotland factory has allowed for effective social distancing amongst production operatives, as demand increases.
Constant communication has been essential in resuming production as Head of Joist Production for the Midlands Jamie Wilkins has now expanded his role to manage joist production across the whole business – including RML Scotland and RML Flooring Central. Production Scheduler Carol Webb has therefore been able focus on the daily tasks for Scotland. This includes linking design to production, creating and optimising cutting sheets, configuring loads, invoicing, stock ordering and reporting figures.
Also in the case of our Joist Designers, flexibility has been facilitated by working from the office for 3 days a week and the remaining 2 days from home. This has ensured a manageable work/life balance for our employees with child care requirements and a positive impact on productivity.
This change in roles has led to our Yard Manager Rob Ardis taking a more hands on approach in all areas of production, now managing health & safety, stock levels and leading the team of factory operatives. Rob’s experience and leadership has been key to our success as production levels have increased week on week.
Capacity is still available at RML Scotland, as discussions are ongoing to supply new sites for existing customers. Key Account Manager Jason Dorks has also been pro-active in connecting with new customers and maintaining relationships with existing contacts to support them as housebuilding picks up.
