National Joist Production Role Expansion

Since the acquisition of National Hickman’s ETFS business in January 2019, Jamie Wilkins joined Robinson Manufacturing as Head of Joist Production for our I-Beam distribution site in Wolverhampton. As joist production in the business expanded to provide national coverage for UK housebuilders, Jamie’s role has developed to include management of our Flooring Central and Scotland sites.

The motivation behind this change was to provide a centralised management system for allocation of work and integrating processes. All joist production supervisors are now able to receive guidance from Jamie and focus on production co-ordination, whilst Jamie gains a wider picture of our operations to report back to Senior Leaders.

Jamie Wilkins – Head of Joist Production

Jamie initially began this transition in January to manage Metal Web Joist production at our factory in Wellingborough. However, the lockdown period allowed him to gradually take on responsibilities from supervisors in Scotland who were on furlough leave. This led to a successful integration of processes, which has continued now production in Scotland has resumed.

Despite these factories being located at different ends of the UK, communication has improved since Jamie has facilitated twice weekly calls between all joist production supervisors, allowing them to share updates and intelligence. As Jamie now has a further reach with his management, the teams around him continue to manage the day-to-day operations of work allocation and customer relationship building at their respective factories.

Jamie has seen the positive changes this has made for the teams he manages: ‘I enjoy watching teams grow and the integration of management has allowed our joist production factories to communicate much more fluidly and learn from each other.’

As there have been new office configurations at our Flooring Midlands factory in Wolverhampton, the Customer Experience Team are in closer proximity to production supervisors. This offers the support for Jamie and his team in communicating updates around orders to customers in a timely manner.

With a future goal to visit the sites under his management more regularly, Jamie is confident in making changes across factories which will bring benefits for efficiency and the customer journey.
