Kickstart Scheme Progress

Building on the legacy of our Founder Tim Robinson, Robinson Manufacturing (RML) are in the process of recruiting and onboarding  a cohort of young people on the government’s kickstart scheme. This aims to provide employment opportunities and experience for people aged between 16-24, who are at risk of long term unemployment.

This scheme provides a 6 month placement to give participants an opportunity to gain vital work experience which will equip them for their future career. Support will also be provided through employability advice, which we aim to deliver in a workbook to show measurable results.

We have been quick to act on this opportunity to bring new talent into the business,  identifying 35 vacancies across all sites and various departments. There has been a high calibre of applicants introduced from local job centres, with 7 employees already beginning their roles and a number of others awaiting their start date.

Remaining vacancies are now at the interviewing stage, with an aim to select further suitable individuals over the next few weeks. The enthusiasm of our new starters has been encouraging to see, as they integrate into the business and begin induction periods.

As the scheme runs until December 2021, we aim to optimise this opportunity by staggering start dates to makes the process more manageable in a busy environment, allowing us to work with and develop small groups and monitor progress. We are also likely to repeat the process with a new cohort once the the first set have completed their placements.

Head of Operations Andreya Ashwell and Head of HR Anna Kennedy are managing the implementation of this scheme, backed enthusiastically by all departments. Alongside the support from direct colleagues in learning their daily tasks, all new starters will receive inductions from Head of HSEQ Matt Davies to educate them around our safety procedures.

We look forward to supporting the progression of these new starters through the Kickstart scheme and hope to make an impact on their future career chances. By providing this stepping stone for young people, we aim to promote the value of working in the construction industry and gain interest in RML as an employer, as there may be placements who pursue a permanent role with us.
