Focus on Darren Cross
With over 20 years management experience in UK Retail Electricals/Electronics, you might not expect to see Darren Cross working on the factory floor at Robinson Manufacturing.
But you’d be wrong. The retail environment, even at a senior level, has changed so much over recent years that Darren decided he needed a change and that 40 wasn’t too late to change career so he made the leap into manufacturing.
“What I always loved about retail was the people I worked with, and the freedom both as an individual and as a manager to provide excellent customer service,” explained Darren, talking about the move. “But the decline of the high street and shift towards e-tail rather than retail has dramatically reduced the ability of individuals to offer real service, so I looked for an opportunity to use my transferable management skills in a people and service driven environment.”
Finding the same customer service driven approach he missed in retail in a manufacturing environment at Robinson Manufacturing, Darren made the leap.
He spent the first 9 months working in our Flooring Central factory, mostly on the metal web press, before being asked to spend some time at the truss factory at RML North West. Here he used his management skills to improve production processes and develop the Cheshire-based team.
Darren’s solutions-based approach is working well at Robinson Manufacturing, where he now looks after the day to day running of four of our factories.
The mid-life career change is suiting Darren well: “I love the interaction with people. The impact on the business of helping individuals within the business find solutions to their challenges can be dramatic and is always rewarding.”
Darren is also running the 2020 London Marathon in support of Child Bereavement UK. Read his story and please donate here.
