Challenging Attic Truss Delivery

RML North West recently designed and supplied attic trusses for a new build home in Helsby, Cheshire, for contractors Mew Design. While we have worked with the project architects, the Keith Davidson Partnership, on projects around Cheshire and Merseyside before, it is our first job for Mew Design.

In the design stages, allowance had to be made for roof lights, chimney, and stair openings. The attic trusses were also “top hatted” to reduce their overall height. As a result, the trusses featured “field splice plates” which are factory pressed to the lower half of the truss whilst the upper can be nailed to complete on site.

Interesting design features arose from the hillside nature of the site. KDP developed a scheme where the ground floor featured 2 bedrooms and storage and the first floor was the main kitchen and living area. The use of attic trusses on this project allowed the addition of 2 further double bedrooms above the first floor living space as well as an en-suite resulting in a dwelling with 4 double bedrooms overall in a unique Cheshire location.

Access to the site was a challenge as it was down a narrow lane with a large overhanging tree. We were able to organise the attic truss delivery on rigid vehicle rather than articulated and the site team helped to escort our vehicle in safely, making sure there was no damage to the tree – or the trusses – as they passed that point.

The new house is in an elevated position on Helsby Hill, with lovely north views over the surrounding area towards the Mersey and North Wales.
