Back to the Floor – Factory series
Our ‘Back to the Floor’ scheme has returned for 2020, a programme in which our senior leaders take the time out of their everyday tasks to experience the roles of our production operatives. This year we are expanding the programme to give our Senior Leaders the opportunity to also spend time with drivers on their deliveries and the customer experience team taking calls.
In this blog we take a closer look into the factory floor section of the programme and how we will be utilising the learnings from this.
As well as gaining a better understanding of employee’s daily tasks, showing an interest in their roles has shown to break down barriers and build stronger relationships. Especially for senior leaders such as Head of HR Anna Kennedy – as pictured below – this time spent with various employees allows her to understand what motivates employees.
Anna spent her time on the with Production Operatives in RML South East, commenting: ‘I was extremely welcomed by the team and they were very open in answering my questions. Working in all areas of production allowed me to fully grasp a full picture of their roles.’
After these experiences, we then interpret employee’s perceptions of their role and decide which aspects should continue, be developed or improved. It is also refreshing to witness the strong team work taking place on the floor and recognise employees who do go the extra mile – which may have been more difficult to notice prior to ‘Back to the Floor’.
Our Head of Operations Andreya Ashwell also took to our Flooring Central factory to get a better insight into Metal Web Joist Production. The team left an impression on her by their level of knowledge the team have around the most effective processes. A particular aspect that pleasantly surprised Andreya was the level of innovation from the team. Off-cuts of timber are utilised for decking to reduce wastage and joists are packed in an efficient manner.
The main benefit gained once this experience has been completed is the ability for us to reflect and adapt. We use observations, thoughts and feedback to analyse our manufacturing process and make any relevant changes. This allows us to maximise our learnings from the factory floor and become more innovative, which translates into improved offerings for our customers.
Any conclusions from ‘Back to the Floor’ are shared in our Senior Leaders Team meetings and we work together as a business to develop in as many areas as possible.
