An industry insight from Professor Noble Francis

During an event held in London by RML last month prior to the WhatHouse? Awards, we were glad to welcome Economics Director of the Construction Products Association Professor Noble Francis as one of our key speakers. Within this event Noble shared his knowledge around current construction industry trends, external factors and forecasts.

Professor Noble Francis is one of the leading economists working in the construction sector. It is essential for us as a supplier to the industry to remain aware of current trends, opportunities and threats and Noble’s expertise is invaluable for RML. His insights are highly valued by our CEO Simon Kidney:

“The economics of UK housebuilding are vital to business planning, not just the big players in the market but also to core suppliers like Robinson Manufacturing. The insights provided by Noble’s work help everyone involved in the sector shape their future business strategies.”

Reflecting on private housing developments, Noble has recently provided information around the percentage year on year growth amongst completions:

‘Private housing completions in the 3 months to October 2019 were still higher than starts but the slowdown in starts in the summer is feeding through. By size of builder:’

Top 10 house builders: 0.0%

Top 11-50 house builders: -5.0%

SME house builders: +1.6%

‘Private house building continues to grow in the North West, Yorkshire & Midlands (albeit at slower rates than a year ago) boosted by Help to Buy, which is offsetting falls in London, South East & parts of the East. Whilst demand is sustained, SMEs continue to start new developments as well as build out but larger house builders are more cautious regarding starting new developments although new Build-to-Rent developments continue apace.’
